NIGHT & DAY
The Bacqueville Gallery is delighted to present Lieven Hendriks' first solo show at Lille. The exhibition brings together works that play on the tension between opposites.
In his pictorial practice, Lieven Hendriks works with the tension between opposites, as evoked by the title Night & Day. Oscillating between shadow and light, clarity and blur, truth and illusion, his works offer a reflection on the way we perceive images and the still-current capacity of painting to construct false appearances. Indeed, seemingly simple or mundane subjects—a fingerprint on a fogged-up window, a blurred landscape reminiscent of poorly focused photographs, cracked shop windows covered in whitewash, a ray of light projected onto a wall—create the illusion of relief or texture. They thus blur the boundary between painted surface and familiar everyday references, creating a sense of déjà vu.
For Lieven Hendriks, technical mastery is never an end in itself, but a tool for revealing the subtle interplay between reality and illusion.
Exhibition from 12 February to 2 May 2026.
Opening on Thursday 12 February 2026, from 6.30pm to 9pm. In the presence of the artist.
