‘Over the line’. It's the phrase the referee calls out when the shot putter or long jumper crosses the white line, the one that decides whether or not the rules of the game have been respected. It's an invisible boundary that (un)limits.
The lines that run through the works in the group show ‘Over The Line’ have every right. They rise and fall to represent the intangible (Jan Van Munster) or interior landscapes (Morgan Dimnet - Qubo Gas, Theresa Möller). They become writing, in snatches of provocative, sometimes cynical yet poetic sentences, forcing us to read between the lines (Delage + Olson). They leave traces, cracks in reality to open up a much wider universe than the one we know (David De Beyter, Marc-Antoine Garnier). Finally, these lines reflect what we want to project onto them (Thomas Devaux).
Crossing the line means going beyond the visible or the rational to access another reality, enigmatic and stimulating, that only artists are capable of opening up.
