AESTHETIC
/ ASCETIC

Galerie Bacqueville is pleased to present a group exhibition bringing together six artists whose practices are diverse but whose approaches resonate with one another.

It's a strange coincidence that the English language brings together ‘aesthetic’ and ‘ascetic’ when it comes to bringing together the works of six artists whose form obeys a certain discipline: For photographer Bérangère Fromont, it means patiently scrutinising the youth of the Place de la République in Paris over the past two years; for visual artist Aurélien Maillard, it means reconstructing a monumental impact piece by piece, in a precise and delicate gesture of repair; for multidisciplinary artist Tim Plamper, it means bringing out the languid and strange beauty ex-nihilo - from a blank page and with a simple pencil; for photographer Thomas Devaux, it means opening a window onto our consumer impulses; for sculptor Norman Dilworth, it means letting mathematics determine the proportions; and for multidisciplinary artist Jonathan Sullam, it means capturing the intimate through ephemeral (photo)graphic gestures.

Each artist is working towards an artistic ideal, putting body and spirit at the service of an essential aesthetic - “esthétique essentielle” in french. Yet another strange linguistic coincidence.
